It has the unfortunate perception of being an overused word that people use to trick professionals into attending an event in order to listen to every sales pitch under the sun. Not to mention the miles you have to drive, bad parking, avoiding cheesy pickup lines and having to repeatedly answer “So what do you do?” If you think I’m going to commiserate with you and tell you-youre right to avoid networking events, you’re wrong. (See the title of this blog!) All of those points above are excusesâ€"but lucky for you, I’m going to get you off your couch, out of your fuzzy slippers and networking in no time. Here’s how you do it: Start by finding a friend who also needs to network. Not your drinking buddy or wingman, but another professional like yourself who is also looking for a job or seeking to increase clientele for his business. Then take this friend with you. Don’t stand around speaking to your friend all evening. In fact, you shouldn’t really speak to him much at all (with the below exception). Instead, before you go, find out what your friend is looking for, in detail. Then give your friend the same information about your goals. Who are you hoping to speak to this evening? What industry or job title are you specifically seeking? Once you’re both clear on the information you each need to procure, start working the roomâ€"on opposite ends. (Literally, go to opposite ends of the venue and start speaking to people.) There are so many great benefits to this tactic: 1. You’re not attending a networking event alone. Should you be cornered by the creepy guy uttering one-liners, you can extricate yourself from the conversation by saying your friend is waiting for youover there. Way over there. 2. By not attending alone, you are much less likely to manufacture an excuse as to why you shouldn’t go. When someone is expecting you to meet them there or you are their ride to the event, your excuses begin to pale. 3. You have a second set of ears listening for opportunities for you. 4. You have someone who can make an introduction for you when they come across someone you need to meet. This is the exception to when it’s okay to chat with the friend you came with. Your friend is going to “talk you up” and say things you want to say about yourself but can’t without sounding like an egomaniac. 5. If youre shy, this forces you to speak to people because you know your friend is expecting you to network on his behalf as well as your own. 6. It makes the process fun. You and your friend can get competitive and see who can find the most qualified professionals to speak to that evening. 7. You will meet many more people and thereby increase the chances of achieving your objective. If you’re looking for a job, make sure you’re networking in the right place. As a career strategist, I teach professionals how to get the job they want, and networking is the way to do it. But like anything, the right tool used incorrectly is completely useless. He nevertheless captured his bride and ran away with her.Upon hearing of this treachery, the Devil grew so angry he stomped his foot on the soil where the warrior lived. The nearby river rose up to flood the land and, when that water receded, a shallow footprint lake remained.In fact, this part-marsh, part-bayou natural lake is one of the bald eagles’ favourite winter nesting homes.  They start migrating from the north sometime in late November and, unlike other raptor birds, will mate as early as February.Time to plan for: so metime between November and May.Wildlife to photograph: beavers, eagles and deer.If you don’t mind going a bit further, to the neighbouring town of Kenton, you could also photograph white squirrels.Photographing Wildlife at the PolesRecently, scientists were appalled to discover plastic embedded in what they thought was the world’s last pristine wilderness.For all that they are remote and have exposure to some of the most extreme conditions on the planet â€" and are now afflicted with plastic waste, the North and South Poles support an amazing abundance of life.Among other species, we find penguin colonies and   curiously-engineered fish in Antarctica and bears, arctic foxes and hares on the globe’s northern cap.Those creatures make either of the poles dream destinations for new as well as seasoned wildlife photographers.Note: if you do plan to head to one of the poles to take pictures of wildlife there, be sure to plan your trip carefully; it takes a bit more preparation to t ake photographs of animals in such extreme conditions!The Galapagos IslandsAs one of the most biologically diverse regions of the planet, this archipelago is home to species found nowhere else on earth.Best of all, because they have been protected for over a century, the wildlife does not see humans as predators; they are completely unafraid of us!What can you photograph in the Galapagos that you cannot take a picture of anywhere else?You may catch a hawk in flight in any nature reserve but Galapagos hawks are unique. Endemic to just a few of the islands, capturing the image of such a raptor would be a rare treat!The same could be said for the short-eared owl and the Galapagos mockingbird.If you are more into ground-level creatures, you can capture a giant tortoise or any of the colourful species of iguanas.Although wildlife there is abundant and not shy at all, you may still want to bring your bean bag camera rest or, if you really want to do Galapagos properly, bring your tripod w ith its gimbal so you can move your camera as needed.Find out what other equipment you should bring with you on a photoshoot... They have been around for thousands of years. They have worked extensively to study and preserve this amazing animal... and now they’ve opened their park to permit viewing and photographing them.It’s best to arrive early in the morning or late afternoon as that is when the pandas are most active.You should bring your telephoto lens and tripods because, as you walk through the park, you will come upon pandas lounging in trees or in the underbrush.As well as the renown black and white giant pandas, you will see red pandas â€" a relative of the raccoon, and a generous population of birds and insects, all available for you to photograph.Here too, you may consider taking pictures of the panda’s natural habitats; the bamboo forest is magnificent!And, if you have a bit of extra time, you may want to dash over to nearby Le Shan to take pictures of the world’s largest Buddha statue.True, it’s not wildlife but it is outdoor photography and the statue, carved out of the mountainside, is quite remarkable to behold. We don’t recommend you putting those ideas to the test.On the other hand, packing your photography gear and heading to Canada is advised.Canada is home not just to the brown bear but also grizzly bears, black bears and the unique kermode bear, also known as the Spirit Bear because of its white fur.Like the white squirrels mentioned earlier, these bears are neither albino nor are they related to polar bears, which you can also find in Canada.Apart from grizzlies, which will attack rather than retreat when confronted, bears are generally fairly shy creatures, preferring to avoid conflict... unless they are hungry, it is mating season or they are protecting their cubs.For safety’s sake, it would be best to stay out of the bears’ habitat.Photographing th em from a distance with a super-long lens and setting your camera’s shutter speed accordingly could still yield an image worthy of entry into a photo contest.Ours is a magnificent world full of amazing creatures; in fact, we’ve not even touched on underwater photography in this article even though there too are breathtaking life forms.For all of you combing the earth to bring us images of seldom-seen creatures: thank you for photographing them and sharing your work. We know the thought can seem a little scary particularly if youre not used to singing in front of others, let alone a trained, professional vocalist!   But dont worry: your teacher isnt there to judge or intimidate you. Perhaps youre wondering what you can really expect at your first voice lesson.   How should you prepare?   Heres a look into a typical lesson experience from Kathryn M., one of our newest teachers in Fairborn, OH: Have you been thinking about taking voice lessons, but you just aren’t sure? A lot of people like to sing in a choir, with the radio, or even in the shower.  But is taking voice lessons right for you?  Here is some information about what to expect at a voice lesson, frequently asked questions about taking voice lessons, and how you can benefit from taking them. The first thing you need to ask yourself is: what are my goals? Establishing your goals with singing is what will help you and your voice teacher set a path for your lessons. If your goals include sight reading better for your community choir, great.  If they include one day singing on the Broadway stage, great. Knowing your goals with singing will help you to stay motivated and moving forward. So, now that you’ve decided to take voice lessons, what’s next?  At your first lesson, there is often uncertainty as to what to expect from the experience.  It’s important to know that although your voice teacher is there to help you improve, he or she will never make you feel like you aren’t good enough to sing. Your voice teacher will work with you where you are at and help you get to the next level.  Just sing out and don’t be afraid to show what you’ve got. What will you learn? Elementary School Parent-Teacher Conferences What to Ask This year, as you sit down with your childs elementary school teacher during conferences, think of both of you on the same team rooting for your child. The conference is an especially great time to discuss how each of you can best help your child, as well as to get to know the adult whom your child spends much of the day with! Here are five topics to discuss with your childs elementary school teacher during parent-teacher conferences: 1. Your childs strengths and challenges You know what these are at home, but youll want to ask the teacher what he or she observes in the classroom. Do those strengths and challenges look the same in the classroom, or do they translate differently based on the setting and peers? Focus on core subjects, but youll also want to know if theres an elective or another class that your child has particularly taken to. In addition, ask the teacher about your childs work habits, including how your child approaches school work during independent class time, as well as turning in homework assignments on time. School is one the primary places where kids naturally learn about socialization, so ask the teacher about your childs social behavior. How does your child get along with other students? Does he or she participate often in class discussions? Does your child generally appear engaged, even if not vocally? Does he or she express frustration in the classroom, and how? You may be able to offer what works for your child at home as an added perspective even if the teacher cannot react in the same way at school. In addition, knowing how your child behaves socially at school can give you ideas of what you may want to discuss with him or her at home. 3. Classroom norms and environment Each classroom has its different rules and regulations. Discuss with the teacher what his or her policies are for turning in homework (including late work), as well as make-up assignments and tests. What happens if your child is absent or needs to leave early or arrive late? What can you expect in terms of homework? Additionally, ask if there are any class rules that differ from typical classrooms. If your child struggles with getting used to class norms, youll be able to reinforce them at home and be on the same page as the teacher. 4. How you can support at home Ask the teacher how else you can help your child adjust to any school challenges. This can include setting up homework space, prioritizing homework time, encouraging time management throughout the week, as well as any resources the teacher can suggest. You might be looking for online resources or book recommendations for your child. If youre interested, you could also ask if the teacher knows of community activities, like events at the local library, that would benefit your child. The teacher may also have some good tips for studying or seeking tutoring. 5. Preferred method of communication Depending on the school, youre likely to have a handful of required parent conferences. Beyond those, however, ask the teacher how to best contact him or her, as well as how the teacher will contact you if needed. Often, teachers provide general info through letters, online announcements, or assignment notebooks know what to look out for. In addition, some teachers prefer email (nowadays, some may even text!), while others prefer phone conversations. Ask your childs teacher what the protocol is for setting up meetings with him or her outside of conferences. Should You Answer SAT Questions in Order ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog After your first time taking an SAT, you may walk away with the feeling that there must be some better way to take this test.It’s so long, and some of the questions are so tricky that they make everything that follows seem even harder. Sure, one way to get better at taking the test is to review punctuation rulesand make sure you know topics like triangle and circle geometry inside out. That sort of work will give you confidence when it comes to content. But some of the most fruitful prep you can do for the SAT is coming up with a game plan. Knowing how you’re going to tackle the test goes a long way towards helping you make sure you can execute on all of that grammar and math content you want to review. In the case of the Reading section, a good strategy is just about the only factor that will influence improved scores. And so much of strategy comes down to what order you answer the questions in and how much energy you give specific ones. Before we develop that strategy, though, let’s talk about how those questions are laid out. Know Order of Difficulty on Each Section The Math sections on the SAT â€" both the No Calculator and Calculator sections â€" are laid out in the pretty predictable way. The multiple choice questions increase in difficulty as the section goes, as do the grid-in questions. That means your easiest math questions are going to appear early in the multiple choice and gridâ€"in segments. With the Verbal sections (Reading and Writing Language), the questions do not go in order of difficulty. Instead, you can expect to have a pretty even distribution of easy, medium, and difficult questions in each individual passage. This is a good place to note that there is no such thing as a “hard passage” on the SAT when it comes to the questions. You’ll always have a pretty equal mix of easy, medium, and hard questions in each passage. If you’re finding a Reading passage written in an older style of English difficult, for example, just remember that there will still be some easy questions you can answer about it just fine! Note: It really helps to read some literature written in that older English. Then, Should I Complete Question in Order? With the Math sections, absolutely answer questions in order. In fact, if you aren’t trying to score above a 700 on Math, you may want to take a little more time to make sure you’re getting the first two-thirds of all of the math questions, since those will be all the easy and medium ones. If you are trying to score above a 700, just make sure you’re getting those easy points and not rushing on the simple stuff. With the Writing Language, you may as well answer the questions in order since you have to read the passage as you go. It will probably just be too confusing to answer questions out of order on this section. Plus, there’s often a question at the end of a Writing Language passage that asks about the passage as a whole, so you’ll want a good understanding of the text. With Reading, feel free to answer questions out of order. In fact, it may help you develop a better bigger picture understanding for the main purpose and author’s intent questions if you answer the line references first, since those questions will basically make you read the whole passage through a second time. You may also want to specifically answer supporting evidence questions such as the one below out of order. When you have a pair of questions where the second asks which set of lines provides evidence in support of the preceding answer, you can always flip the order you approach these in. Here’s a simple strategy: Test the line references from the second question’s answer choices to see which contains information that could answer the first question. Eliminate all answer choices in the second question that don’t work and try to select the best one. Use that best answer from the second question to develop an answer for the first question. Use that answer to eliminate all answer choices in the first question that disagree with that text. Select the best of the remaining answer choices for the first question. Remember: The lines with supporting evidence that are correct for the second question might not appear in the same part of the passage as the lines referenced in the first question.
